Daisy Hill Hospital to Permanently Remove Southern Trust Emergency General Surgery Services

Share post:

Daisy Hill Hospital’s emergency general surgery services are set to permanently relocate to Craigavon Area Hospital, a decision approved by the Department of Health following a temporary move due to consultant shortages. Previously, emergency general surgery was operated across both hospitals until a consultant shortage led to its suspension at Daisy Hill in Newry. Now, with the Department of Health’s endorsement, the relocation becomes permanent.

Approximately three patients daily were redirected from Daisy Hill to Craigavon for emergency surgery, with no indications of harm detected after assessment, according to the Department of Health.

Emergency general surgery encompasses unscheduled care for abdominal organs like the stomach, gallbladder, and bowel, including specialist advice, tests, and surgeries when necessary. Peter May, the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health, explained that the decision reflects the necessity for consolidation and specialization in healthcare services, aligning with the evolving medical landscape.

Despite the relocation, Daisy Hill Hospital will retain its role as an Elective Overnight Stay Centre, serving patients requiring overnight care after planned surgeries. Since April 2023, Daisy Hill has treated over 6000 patients across various specialities, including general surgery, gynaecology, ENT, and endoscopy.

The decision to consolidate emergency general surgery at Craigavon Area Hospital follows the direction outlined in the Department of Health’s Review of General Surgery, emphasizing the need for sustainable services and addressing recruitment challenges.

Recruitment and retention difficulties for consultant general surgeons at Daisy Hill were attributed to clinical factors rather than operational shortcomings. Smaller patient volumes at certain hospitals pose challenges for specialized training and skill development among clinical teams.

The Southern Trust’s decision underwent a public consultation process and aligned with the Northern Ireland Executive Formation legislation and transformation agenda for healthcare services, emphasizing the need for adaptable and sustainable solutions.

In essence, the decision to consolidate emergency general surgery services underscores the evolving healthcare landscape and the imperative to ensure sustainable and effective patient care across Northern Ireland’s hospital network.
